Andrew Keenleyside comments, “I love the textbook rich, dark notes coming from our Cairnmuir vineyard fruit interacting with the barrels. For 2017, we’re seeing lifted red notes and lovely tension from the lengthy ripening period in our Felton Rd parcels. The greater diurnal shift here drives acids with subtle power, and a dance of tannins across the palate giving the wine energy and life. I think the trifecta of Dijon clones, schist soils and marked diurnal shift will result in acids and tannins of increasing finesse and presence as the vines age”

“Akarua have achieved a remarkable consistency of style and high quality with this label over many years. This is as good as ever with typically svelte, dense, and succulent plum, dark cherry and thyme flavours, with a seasoning of spicy oak and a drop-dead gorgeous texture. Very Bannockburn”

Deep, dark purple/red colour, looking more like a shiraz than pinot. The bouquet is toasty and almond-like, seemingly with a generous oak component, while the palate is full-blooded and firm, deep and strongly built, with lashings of tannin, which adds a grippy firmness to the finish and aftertaste. A solid wine, big and bold, generous and amply oaked and structured. I suspect this will come into its own with two or three more years in the bottle.

5 stars, Cuisine Magazine, Feb 2019
A youthful yet complex wine with a wonderfully seductive aroma. The palate is toasty with an intensely rich fruit profile. The tannin structure is generous and warm which will soften and integrate with further cellar ageing.

This bold, finely textured red was estate-grown, hand-picked from mature vines and matured in French oak barriques. Fragrant, mouthfilling (14% alc/vol) and supple, it is crammed with ripe plum, cherry and spice flavours and shows great vigour and potential.
