Visiting the 25 steps takes your breath away. The sheer drama of the terraced slope, the awe-inspiring views and the seeming impossibility of the task at hand.
An ancient glacial slope carved with 800 metre long terraces, two rows of vines per step, 120 metre elevation change, aspects facing the four points of the compass, and a mix of Pinot Noir clones from Pommard and Dijon make up the nine hectare single vineyard site called "25 Steps". The slope was terraced in 2001, taking four months to complete and planted soon after. Each vine grows under varying conditions in elevation, soil, sun and wind exposure resulting in a wide range of tannins, acidity, colour intensity and flavour. The vineyard is a study in the "growing" of a complex wine.
Due to the natural variation in the fruit, 25 Steps contributes to many of our wines including sparkling wines, RUA rosé and RUA Pinot Noir. However, the purest way to taste 25 steps is in a mouthful of either single vineyard wine, the 25 Steps Rosé or Pinot Noir. Made in small quantities, you’ll find them in our restaurant in Arrowtown, both Cellar Doors and in bars and restaurants across New Zealand and Australia.
